Steve Cosson’s insightful meditation on fear of dying opened at 59E59 Theaters.
January 17, 2018: The Undertaking, written and directed by Steve Cosson, the Artistic Director of the Civilians, opened at 59E59Theaters for a limited engagement through February 4. The NY Times called the show “morbidly funny,” when the it debuted at the 2016 BAM Next Wave Festival. The heart of the story is death and the hero journeys to the world of the dead returning with a transformed appreciation for life.
In THE UNDERTAKING, a single interview evolves into an unexpectedly personal dialogue as two actors embark on playful and quirky trip to the other side. The gifted and energetic actors play multiple characters drawn from the project’s investigation. They include amongst others a near death experiencer, a prominent philosopher, and a cancer patient on a psilocybin trip. Along the way they find humor, terror, and a surprising test of friendship.
Created from interviews and recorded conversations, The Undertaking takes The Civilians signature form of investigative theater and turns the evening into one of the company’s most personal works to date.
The cast features Dan Domingues (The Cherry Orchard at Atlantic Theater Company) and Aysan Celik (The Black Eyed at New York Theater Workshop).
The design team includes Marsha Ginsberg (set and costume design); Thomas Dunn (lighting design); Mikhail Fiksel (sound design); and Tal Yarden (projection design).
The Undertaking is now playing at 59E59 Theaters, 59 East 59th Street between Park and Madiosn Avenues, for a limited engagement through Sunday, February 4. The performance schedule is Tuesday – Friday at 7:15 PM; Saturday at 2:15 PM & 7:15 PM; Sunday at 2:15 PM. Single tickets are $25 – $35 ($24.50 for 59E59 Members).
