The world premiere of Teresa’s Ecstasy by Begonya Plaza opened Off Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theater in the West Village on Wednesday March 12, 2012. Directed by Will Pomerantz the three character play set in Barcelona features the playwright Begonya Plaza as Carlotta, a Spanish Catholic writer, who returns to Spain to write a magazine article and serve her husband Andres, played by Shawn Elliott, with divorce papers. Traveling with the writer is her publisher Becky, played by Linda Larkin. The tale centers on Carlotta’s quest for the divine while researching an article on St Teresa of Avila, a 16th Century nun, who once said “More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones.”

The press release states “Teresa’s Ecstasy is a sexually charged look at politics, religion and ultimately love.” The limited engagement through April 1 features original music by the Catalan composer Albert Carbonell.
The performance schedule is Tuesday through Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 7pm. Tickets are $60 at Ovation Tix 212-352-3101 or online at www.cherrylanetheater.org
