Straight-Talking by Sam Affoumado – An Equity Staged Reading
Mental health experts believe that same-gender sexual orientation and variations in gender identity are a part of the normal spectrum of human diversity and do not constitute a mental disorder. The American Psychiatric Association opposes any psychiatric treatment, such as ‘reparative’ or ‘conversion’ therapy, which is based on the assumption that homosexuality is a mental disorder.
Though ‘reparative’ therapy for minors is now illegal in California, New Jersey, and Washington D.C., with pending legislative action
in nine other states, the practice continues throughout the country with some devastating results for the young people forced to undergo the therapy.
Straight-Talking explores what happens when a Westchester couple force their son to change the essence of who he is. Kyle, a vulnerable high school senior, is sent to a gay ‘conversion’ therapist to rid him of his unwanted same-sex attraction. His transformation is a revelation. Tickets are free but reservations are required.
