City Center will New York premiere Montreal-based Les 7 Doigts de la Main [The 7 Fingers] internationally-celebrated nouveau and "spellbindingly inventive" cirque spectacular Séquence 8 April 16-26. Since its 2012 premiere, this family entertainment is a theatrical blend of daredevilry, hip-hop, comedy, and music that explores human emotions "so intense that they explode into highflying acrobatics," has won acclaim in 15 countries.
The cast is made up of eight "death-defying" members from Les 7 Doigts. Shana Carroll and Sébastian Soldevila, two of the company’s A.D.s, direct. This marks the company’s first full-length New York work since 2011’s Traces, which had a year-long run Off-Broadway and was named one of Time’s Top Ten Plays and Musicals of the Year.
Les 7 Doigts de la Main was founded in 2002 by seven artists with the goal of "making circus a transformative experience for audiences and developing shows in a collaborative creative process that nurtures new generations of circus artists."
The name is a twist on the French idiom "the five fingers of the hand," used to describe "distinct parts united tightly, moving in coordination towards one common goal." Performances are characterized by combining traditional acrobatics with elements of theater, skateboarding, basketball, and parkour, a holistic training discipline using movement from military obstacle course training.
The company staged the 600-person spectacle for the 2014 Sochi Olympics opening ceremony. Company co-founder Gypsy Snider is credited for the "circus recreation" for the Tony and Drama Desk-winning Broadway revival of Pippin and for the nightclub extravanganza Queen of the Night.
Séquence 8 plays 12 performances. Tickets are $25-$110 and available at the City Center box office, through CityTix at (212) 581-1212, and online at www.NYCityCenter.org, where you’ll fine showtimes.
