PERLMAN MUSIC PROGRAM SHAVOUT 5776 CONCERT at JEWISH CENTER OF THE HAMPTONS.
By Janet Lehr
The Perlman Music Program (PMP) 20th anniversary celebration was held at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons on Shavout 5776. It was a celebration of “Toby’s Dream” of bringing Concerts, Master Classes, Open Rehearsals, and Family Events to worthy musicians and the public, begun 20 years ago. The Perlman Music program (PMP) was founded by Toby Perlman in 1996.
PMP continues to grow and develop into one of the leading summer chamber music programs of its kind. Devoted entirely to the study of great chamber works, the program brings together legendary artist-faculty and young artist participants for two and a half weeks of intense rehearsals, master classes, joyous sight reading sessions, and electrifying performances.
The Perlman Music Program has emerged into a total education program which welcomes gifted young students of the violin, viola, cello and bass into its richly supportive musical community. Approximately 40 musicians from around the world, ages 12-18, come together each summer for a seven-week program on their beautiful waterfront campus on Shelter Island, New York, where each student is encouraged to take risks and discover their individual voice.
PMP’s world-class faculty, led by Itzhak Perlman, offers a curriculum of solo, chamber music, and orchestral repertoire at the highest level.
The Chorus was the climax of an exceptional Chamber Music Program held this past Sunday at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons, which included the W.A. Mozart Piano Quartet in G Minor, the A. Dvorak Piano Trio in E Minor, a thrilling rendition of the exceptional late D. Shostokovich Piano Trio in E Minor, Op. 67; along with works by Schubert and Mendelssohn, and the magnificent concluding Chorus.
The program at the Jewish Center was a perfect studious and joyous celebration, held on the Jewish Holiday of Shavout, this year being 5776 in the Hebrew calendar; a Holiday celebrated annually, commemorating the date that Moses and the Jewish People received the Ten Commandments on Mt Sinai.
