Botha and Fleming Star in PBS Great Performances at the Met: Otello

Verdi’s Shakespearean tragedy and dramatic masterpiece Otello, starring Johan Botha in the title role and the incomparable Renée Fleming as Otello’s innocent, but nonetheless ill-fated wife, Desdemona, will be presented by PBS Great Performances at the Met on Sunday, February 24 at Noon on PBS; 12:30 P.M. on THIRTEEN. Fleming made her Met debut in her mid-30s in Otello.

Semyon Bychkov conducts Elijah Moshinsky’s production . The libretto is by Arrigo Boito. The villainous Iago is played by Falk Struckmann. Tenor Michael Fabiano, a winner of the Met’s 2007 National Council Auditions, makes his house debut as Cassio.

A highlight of Act Four is Verdi’s "Ave Maria," totally different from the more traditional ones, sung by Desdemona. Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky hosts the telecast.
