Premiere of Only Yesterday, a new play by Bob Stevens, looks at one night in the lives of Paul McCartney and John Lennon before they were famous.
September 13, 2019: Northern Stages is presenting the NY premiere of Only Yesterday, a new play by Bob Stevens, which opened last night at 59E59 Theaters for a limited engagement through Sunday, September 29th. Paul McCartney and John Lennon are together again in the playwright’s intimate look at them, one night, in Key West just before fame changes everything. Stevens, best known for The Wonder Years, Murphy Brown, and Malcolm In the Middle, focuses on an obscure night when John and Paul were just about to become the most famous young men in the world.
After months of performing for arenas of fans, John and Paul find themselves stranded in a cheap motel room in Key West. They do what many young men do when they’re bored—get drunk and have some laughs. But as their talk turns serious, they bond over the revelation of childhood events and find inspiration for the music that changed our lives.
The cast features Tommy Crawford (Veil’d at WP Theater, SeaWife at Naked Angels) as Paul McCartney and Christopher Sears (Gently Down the Stream at the Public Theater, The Harvest at LCT3) as John Lennon with Christopher Flockton (NYC sketch comedy group The Belgian Summers) and Olivia Swayze (Off Broadway debut).
The design team includes Michael Ganio (set designer); Allison Crutchfield (costume designer); Dan Kotlowitz (lighting and projections designer); and Jane Shaw (sound designer). The Production Stage Manager is Danielle Zandri.
