My Dear Aunt Sally **1/2

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally opens at 59E59 Theaters.

The World Premiere of Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, presented by the One Year Lease Theater Company, opened at 59E59 Theaters on October 6. The clever script by Brooklyn-based playwright Kevin Armento, a 2015 O’Neill National Playwriting Finalist, follows an illicit affair between a high school math teacher and her fifteen year-old student. Armento’s 75 minute play explores the budding affair from the unusual perspective of the student’s cell phone, which goes on a wild journey from pockets to purses with the cast acting out the different characters on the phone. The story is intended to be a look at the choices that accumulate in the unfortunate indiscretion, while the student’s friends struggle to comprehend what’s happening.

The swift fluid production directed by Ianthe Demos features precision movement
choreographed by Natalie Lomonte, who was recently commissioned by Parsons Dance Company for their 2015 Joyce Season.

The gifted cast executes the movement and dialogue meticulously, unfortunately the form leaves little room for dramatic conflict and the play comes off as cleverly presented witty exposition. The skilled actors, who perform this challenging feat, are Danny Bernardy (Shear Madness, Cougar! The Musical), Sarah-Jane Casey (What We Know, Skin Tight), Nick Flint (pool (no water, What We Know), Christina Bennett Lind (House of Cards, The Heart of Robin Hood, pool (no water)) and Ethan Slater (What We Know) along with Estelle Bajou as the Composer/Musician.

The original Score is by Estelle Bajou, with lighting design by Mike Riggs, scenic design by James Hunting, costume design by Kenisha Kelly and associate scenic design and props design by Olivia McGiff,

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally is now playing for a limited run from through October 24 at 59E59 Theaters, 59 East 59th Street, NYC. Tickets are $35 and are available online at www.59e59.org or by calling 212-279-4200.
