Eugene O’Neill Theater Centers Honors Meryl Streep
The Monte Cristo Award’s dinner honored Meryl Streep at the Edison Ballroom, 240 West 47th Street, on Monday. A star studded array of guests from film, television and theater came out to honor the Grand Dame of Film. The 2012 honoree Michael Douglas and his beautiful wife Catherine Zeta Jones, reunited after their trial separation were on hand for the dinner. Others sighted on the red carpet included Judith Light, John Patrick Shanley, Alice Ripley, Jamie deRoy, Billy Magnussen, Richard Bey, Carmen de Lavallade and Scott Schwartz.
The Monte Cristo Award is presented to a prominent theater artist each year in recognition of a distinguished career exemplifying Eugene O’Neill’s "pioneering spirit, unceasing artistic commitment, and excellence." Past recipients of the Award include Christopher Plummer, Michael Douglas, James Earl Jones, Harold Prince, Brian Dennehy, Karl Malden, Arthur & Barbara Gelb, and Wendy Wasserstein.
The Award is just one of many events held to commemorate the O’Neill’s 50th Anniversary this year. Additional celebration events include the release of The O’Neill: The Transformation of Modern American Theater by author, playwright, critic and O’Neill alumnus Jeffrey Sweet and published by Yale University Press and an exhibition at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts titled The O’Neill: The Transformation of Modern American Theater, running May 17 through September 13, 2014. The O’Neill will also celebrate through alumni reunions across the country, as well as the annual Summer Gala on July 11, 2014.
