Her mother, a pianist, started her singing at 3 and at age 9 she won a singing contest in her hometown, Topeka, KA. The prize was a 13-week, half-hour radio show. Destiny was calling. Steve Alan saw her at The Colony Club and put her on national television. That led to a recording contract with RCA. When she was recording for RCA, she would come to New York and play clubs around the city. Johnny Carson heard her at The Living Room and booked her on his show, which led to a record 76 appearances.

Rex Reed in the NY Observer said, “Marilyn Maye has everything. Se can belt, and she can sing ballads with the kind of warmth that makes your heart smile. She has a theatrical flair that captivates and enthralls, and jazz-spiced chops that can reach notes most singers a third her age can’t even hit in their dreams. She’s the real deal, the surviving artist of the American popular singer.”

What she does best is act the lyrics to the songs she sings. She’s a consummate actress and storyteller that connects with her audience. She sings to them, not for them, and in the process creates a relationship with the audience. Her skill at acting led to staring stock roles in Mame and Hello Dolly. The lady has done it all.

“Here’s to Life” by Artie Butler and Phyllis Molinary and “Secret of Life” by James Taylor are songs that Maye especially likes singing. She has said, “It’s such a great philosophy of living in the moment. It’s what I believe in, appreciating every single day of your life. I love closing shows with “Secret of Life” … enjoying the passage of time. Any fool can do it, there ain’t nothing to it.”

Maye was booked to join Bay Street in 2020 when she was just 92. Now at 94, she is even better. Don’t miss her. I promise, you will not be disappointed. Audiences are amazed at her ability to thrill and delight. She is a true inspiration to life.
