Jamie deRoy & friends “Backstage at The Sound of Music,” is an insightful Telly Award winning segment from 1999.
January 2, 2021: Our friend, Jamie deRoy, shared with us a Telly Award winning segment from her long running show Jamie DeRoy & friends. We thought you would love the segment, which aired in 1999.
In the segment, Jamie goes backstage at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfield) for an insightful look at the 1998 Broadway revival of the Sound of Music starring the late Rebecca Luker, who died on December 23 from ALS. The 28-minute segment, with video by Rick McKay, reveals some of the behind- the-scenes magic that happened eight times a week, twice on Wednesday and Saturday, during the two year run. Jamie visited the show a year into the run just as Rebecca was set to depart and a relatively unknown 19-year old, Laura Benanti, with a small part in the show was about to take over the leading role of Maria. Jamie visits with both of them, along with many of the people, behind the scenes that make it look so easy.
