Dorian & Jeffrey Bergen hosted a lively opening reception for Totems & Deities: The Sculpture of Herb Alpert and Anita Huffington at ACA Galleries, 529 West 20th Street in the heart of the Gallery District. The exhibition of two artists, who found early success in music and dance, pairs Alpert’s abstract bronze sculptures, which can be compared to the freedom and spontaneity of his improvisational work as a jazz musician, with Huffington’s figurative bronze work inspired by the fluidity and form of her experience as a modern dancer. The exhibition curated by Mikaela Sardo Lamarche envelopes the gallery with a sensual lure that pulls the viewer into the room and the exciting juxtapositions of the artist’s tall linear sculptures.
Herb Alpert, an 8 time Grammy Winner, was awarded the National Medal of Art by President Barack Obama in 2013, and his CD, "Steppin’Out," is nominated for a Grammy Award this year for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Mr. Alpert’s began working on his Spirit Totems series in 2000 inspired by the tribes of the Pacific Northwest. In conjunction with this exhibition at ACA Galleries three monumental bronze sculptures, Grace, Freedom, & Gratitude, ranging in height from 16 to 18 feet tall, will be installed in Dante Park for an opening reception on January 25 that will be on view at the park on 64th Street opposite Lincoln Center through April 15, 2014.
