The Art of Graham Nash, an exhibition featuring a diverse range of the artist’s works, opened at New York City’s ACA Galleries at 529 West 20th Street in the Chelsea Gallery District on October 11. 2012. The gallery hosted an overflowing turnout at the reception for Nash and his work. On display are 50 of Nash’s works including photographic images, several politically themed photo assemblages and original pastel pieces through October 27. The artist himself was present with family and friends to meet guests at the exciting "rock" like happening.
Graham Nash, the legendary singer-songwriter, in person is a charmingly intelligent and charismatic spirit, who few realize has always been a closeted photographer. I was surprised to discover that inspired by his father, an amateur photographer, Nash started taking pictures when he was 10 years old. "I had a camera before I had a guitar," he said but he didn’t start painting until around 1974 when he was on a stadium tour that had never been done before and everything around him was wildly chaotic madness. He needed peace and he said "Painting was the door!" He began working on a sketch pad and some of the sketches from this period are on view.
Nash displays a passion and authenticity describing the evolution of his work. Besides the early sketches and photographs the exhibition also features provocative large format photo assemblages in mixed media, where the artist addresses political and social issues questioning and examining contemporary mores. "I believe that knowledge is power, that information and ideas are vital to our very survival, that our many problems should be faced, and can be dealt with," says Nash. He scans hi resolution photos of torn posters adding images often depicting real life events like a photo of Emmett Till that evokes historic turning points or socially relevant events.
Los Angeles, CA, September 25, 2012: Graham Nash has helped shape the world around him through ideas, innovations, and influential works of art for more than four decades. A legendary singer-songwriter, Nash is also an internationally renowned photographer and digital imaging pioneer whose work is represented-by a classic 1969 portrait of David Crosby-in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Some of the works featured in The Art of Graham Nash at ACA Galleries were previously published in the book Eye To Eye: Photographs By Graham Nash (Steidl, 2004).
