Glenn Close Is Donating Clothes to Benefit Charity
By: Ellis Nassour
Multiple Tony nominee and three-time winner, Drama Desk winner, and six-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close is literally donating the clothes off her back – or at least the designer wardrobe she embraced during five seasons as duplicitous, power-hungry high stakes litigator Patti Hewes on the acclaimed legal thriller Damages [FX, and Direct TV], to Bring Change 2 Mind (BC2M), a charity she founded.
Close’s goal is to have BC2M "emerge as the world’s most effective organization working to end the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness through the distribution of educational materials based on the latest scientific research. BC2M acts as a portal to a coalition of organizations providing service, screening, information, support, and treatment.
The idea was born out of a partnership between Close and Fountain House, where Glenn volunteered in order to learn more about mental illness, which her sister, Jessie Close, and nephew, Calen Pick, live with.
"I’m excited to bring two of my most heartfelt experiences together – a favorite TV role, Patty Hewes on Damages, and my work for Bring Change 2 Mind," says Close. "The fifth and final season of the series is currently available from Sony Home Entertainment, which generously agreed that Patty’s amazing wardrobe should benefit this important cause."
Through July 19 on eBay and www.bringchangedamagesauction.com, 380 couture fashions from designers such as Armani, Balenciago, Prada, and Domenico Vacca and shoes by Christian Louboutin are up for bids for BC2M. There’s a full display of the clothing, many of which were only worn briefly, with current bids on the website, along with a video from Close.
BC2M is also partnering with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions affected by mental illness, for the Fall 2013 NAMI Walks nationwide fundraiser. Money raised by walk teams will be shared by BC2M and NAMI.
"I’m hopeful you’ll join in our effort," Close says. "The most powerful steps we take are those we take together. We’re changing minds and changing lives every day!"
Watch Extra on July 16 [check listings for local telecast time] to not only sign up for the Walks, but also to join host Nicole Dabeau, who’ll introduce Close. Viewers will be able to ask the star about one of the favorite roles of her career coming to an end.
