The 61st Annual Drama Desk Awards were presented by TheaterMania on Sunday, June 5 at The Town Hall in NYC hosted by Michael Urie. The awards were spread around evenly with no show dominating the evening and three, The Humans, Shuffle Along, and the revival of She Loves Me, each winning four awards including Outstanding Play, Outstanding Musical, and Outstanding Revival of a Musical, respectively.
Outstanding Revival of a Play went to View from the Bridge which also took Outstanding Director of a Play for Ivan Van Hove. Outstanding Director of a Musical was a tie between John Doyle, The Color Purple and Bartlett Sher, She Loves Me.
The evening streamed live by TheaterMania featured musical performances from Southern Comfort, Bright Star, Waitress, First Daughter Suite, and Disaster as well as the song “I Was Here” with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens performed by Santino Fontana in memory of people from the theater that died this past year.
Jessica Lange, Long Day’s Journey into Night, and Frank Langella, The Father won Outstanding Actress and Actor in a play, while Cynthia Erivo, The Color Purple, and Danny Burstein, Fiddler on the Roof took home awards for the Outstanding Actress and Actor in a Musical.
