In case you weren’t there, here’s a short Cabaret review recap:
Cheyenne Jackson’s Cocktail Hour: Music of the Mad Men Era was “groovy” at Carnegie Hall’s NY Pops Series as Jackson sizzled showing off facets of his sexy baritone and liquid falsetto range, and welcoming Jane Krakowski as special guest. No doubt Idaho produced more than yummy potatoes when Cheyenne came on the scene.
Bebe Neuwirth had a matter of fact approach in Stories with Piano #3 at Feinstein’s at Loews Regency. The show is about moments in a life, abstract and real, the songs telling the stories. Depths of emotional passion flowed in Weill-Brecht’s art piece “Bilbao Song” and “Surabaya Johnny.” Her voice may not be sparkling, as rough edges with a certain harshness resound, but there’s an undeniable resonating power and graceful dance movements, her hands gently conveying an impressive tale.
For Marilyn Maye The Best of Times is (always) Now. The Queen of technique is as feisty, fervent and flirty as ever but more so! There truly is no tune like a Maye tune when it comes to attention to lyric and nuance, as the hidden gems are unearthed at each turn. She’s a master class of sparkle – – “Look at the old gal now, fellas,” sang the Kansas City wonder!
