By: Ellis Nassour
The finale of Season 15 of the popular and acclaimed series Broadway by the Year will be June 22 at 8 P.M. at Town Hall and feature tunes from the last quarter century of Broadway [from 1991]. Headlining the cast of 25 will be special guest Tony Danza, two-time DD nominee and YouTube sensation Christina Bianco, Grammy-winning country legend Larry Gatlin, Tony and Drama Desk winner Randy Graff; and DD nominees Lisa Howard and Josh Grisetti (It Shoulda Been You). Scott Siegel is creator, host, and writer.
This season will have showcased 100 years of Broadway musicals over four concerts. The shows includes behind-the-scenes nitty gritty and tunes from not only Broadway’s best, but many of the long-forgotten – some hits, some flops.
Additional guests include DD nominee Jeannette Bayardelle, belter Klea Blackhurst ((The Nutty Professor; recent Hazel workshop), Camile Saviola (Nine), two-time Nightlife Award winner Scott Coulter, singer/dancer/DD Nominee Jeffry Denman (Yank!), Cheryl Freeman (The Acid Queen, Tommy), two-time DD nominee Kenita Miller, Dillon McCartney (of the Three Irish Tenors); Tony Nominee Sahr Ngaujah; Olivier nominee Kyle Scatliffe; singer/dancer Jimmy Sutherland, Alysha Umphress (On the Town), singers from the Rising Stars series, and the BBTY Chorus. You can, as is always the case, expect surprise guests and some unplugged moments.
Overseeing all this in some miraculous way is arranger and music director Ross Patterson and his Little Big Band. Coulter will also direct.
"This edition of Broadway by the Year will feature some particularly nostalgic moments," states Siegel. "We’re featuring several stars who originated the songs they’ll be singing from the shows in which they starred. Cheryl Freeman (The Civil War), Larry Gatlin (The Will Rogers Follies), Randy Graff (A Class Act), Sahr Ngaujah (Fela!), and Kyle Scatliffe (The Scottsboro Boys) to name a few."
Among the shows featured will be Avenue Q, Beautiful, Big, The Full Monty, The Light in the Piazza, Mary Poppins, and Ragtime.
