Broadway by the Year Salutes Another Quarter Century of Musicals: 1941-1965
By: Ellis Nassour
The great Hollywood dream factory, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ([M-G-M)’s famous boast was it had on its roster "More stars than there are in the heavens!"
Heck, that ain’t nothin’ compared to Town Hall and impresario Scott "The Host with the Most" Siegel’s Broadway by the Year(s) boast: 100 Years of Broadway Musicals in one season!
The 15th season of this acclaimed, bargain-priced entertainment jewel in New York’s cabaret crown continues on Monday at 8 P.M. at Town Hal with Broadway highlights and then some from 1941-1965 — certainly a quarter century of incredible musical classics from shows, many of which are as beloved today as back when: Carousel, Finian’s Rainbow, Hello Dolly, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The King and I, Kiss Me Kate, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Oliver!, The Pajama Game, West Side Story, and, as Siegel is famous for, more!
The line-up of stars, enough to fill an aircraft hangar, is mindboggling: John Bolton (Drama Desk nominee, A Christmas Story), Liz Callaway (Tony nominee, Baby), Ben Davis (Tony honoree Baz Luhrmann’s La Boheme, Violet), Jeff Harnar (Two-time MAC Award winner), Kendrick Jones (The Scottsboro Boys), Beth Leavel (Tony winner, The Drowsy Chaperone), Julia Murney (Wicked; two-time DD nominee, Falling,The Wild Party), Lari White (three-time Grammy winner; Ring of Fire), Luba Mason (How to Succeed…, The Will Rogers Follies), Carolyn Montgomery-Forant (Nightlife, MAC, Bistro Awards), Karen Oberlin (Nightlife, MAC, Bistro Awards), Molly Pope (Found), Kelli Rabke (Les Miz), Noah Racey (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Never Gonna Dance, Curtains), Lee Roy Reams (Tony nominee, 42nd Street), Steve Rosen (Guys and Dolls, DD nominee: The Other Josh Cohen), Alexandra Silber (Grammy nominee, Master Class), Ryan Silverman (DD nominee: Passion; Side Show revival), Jenny Lee Stern (Rocky), KT Sullivan (American Rhapsody), and the Broadway by the Year chorus.
As he has for all the years of Broadway by the Year, Siegel will reminisce with memories of past shows, their stars, and interesting facts of the period. Accompanying the singers will be series music director Ross Patterson and his Little Big Band.
Broadway by the Year sponsors include Bank of America and the Edythe Kenner Foundation. Tickets are $47 – $104 and available at the Town Hall box office and through TicketMaster.com or (800) 982-2787.
