June 2, 2012: Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor launched their 21st season with the American Premier of My Brilliant Divorce starring Polly Draper. The first installment of their Mainstage Summer Season directed by Matt McGrath was a huge success filling the theater and bringing out many of the community’s major show business luminaries. The one person play by Geraldine Aron was originally produced in Britain and has toured the world. The insightful and touching story concerns an American divorcee, an ex-patriot who has been jilted by her annoying British husband. The evening, however, proves divorce can be fun as Angela is forced to deal with a critical mother, a unsavory attorney and hypochondria.
Polly Draper is probably best known to television viewers as Ellen on the landmark series “Thirtysomething,” nabbing an Emmy nomination for her role. Besides Broadway and film the actress created “The Naked Brothers Band, a movie that spurned a hit Nickelodeon TV series. Playwright Geraldine Aron was born in Ireland and spent her adult life in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Artistic Director Murphy Davis announced that the 2012 Summer Season is being dedicated to Sybil Christopher, who originally founded the non for profit theater 20 years ago. But the fantastic news was that the landlord had extended their lease another 10 years, giving them ample time to find a permanent home.
