Bay Street Summer Gala

Annual Summer Gala returns to Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. Honorees include Julie Andrews, Matthew Broderick, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

July 9, 2023: Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor hosted their Annual Summer Gala 2023 after a three-year hiatus because of covid. With the health scare well behind us, Artistic Director Scott Schwartz and Executive Director Tracy Mitchell were ready to let the festivities begin! And Bay Street, the little theater in Sag Harbor with a Big Heart, did exactly that by presenting a fun filled musical tribute to the legendary Julie Andrews as well as musical tributes to Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, who were in attendance and were honored with the Joel Grey Lifetime Achievement Award for their contributions to the theater and beyond.

Dame Julie Andrews was the recipient of the first ever and newly minted Julie Andrews Lifetime Achievement Award, created in her honor. Julie and her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, who accepted Julie’s honor, have been instrumental in the theater’s development since its conception by their friend, Sybil Christopher, the original founder. Before introducing her world- renowned mum’s filmed acceptance, Emma, who writes best-selling children’s books with her, spoke on her mum’s involvement in the theater during the early days by telling an amusing story about stunned patrons arriving early on opening night to discover Julie mopping the theater’s lobby floor.

Board Member Carol Konner was the Philanthropic Honoree, and the event took place throughout the theater, so guests had a peak backstage to see the magic happens. Performers included Derrick Davis as Emcee, who performed with Max Chlumecky, Lora Lee Gayer, Samantha Massell, and Matthew Scott. Associate Artistic Director, Will Pomerantz, directed the evening, and Isaac Mizrahi served as Celebrity Auctioneer.
