Audrey Appleby Dances with Tragedy

January 20, 2020: We are living in tragic times. But singer/songwriter Audrey Appleby is adding an optimistic note, or rather many notes, to this troubled moment with her new song “Dancing with Tragedy.” Set to be released on Spotify on January 29, the song laments the time when “life was juicy, wrapped up in a bow,” but insists “I know I’ll be alright.”

Appleby has performed at numerous New York City venues, including Rockwood Music Hall, The Triad and BargeMusic under the Brooklyn Bridge. She’s also performed internationally, most notably at the Latin Quarter’s Caveau de la Huchette, one of my favorite hangouts when I was young and living on the Left Bank (not the Latin Quarter, but the much less romantic 13thArrondissement).

“Dancing with Tragedy” has a finger-snapping Latin beat, and lush orchestration. And Appleby’s breathy but determined voice is the perfect medium for her message.
