October 13, 2013: Following two highly successful sold out runs in London Trevor Nunn’s critically acclaimed production of Samuel Beckett’s radio play ALL THAT FALL starring British theater icons, Eileen Atkins and Michael Gambon, opened at 59E59 Theaters for a strictly limited engagement untill December 8th. The two stars are nothing short of fascinating in a razor sharp adaptation by Nunn that is simply mesmerizing.
The tale of age and loss presents a startling, often funny, look at grief and aging. The play was commissioned by the BBC as a radio play and was first broadcast in 1957. The story set in rural Ireland follows Mrs. Rooney (Eileen Atkins) as she struggles with old age and arthritis on her way to the train to meet her blind and ill-tempered husband (Michael Gambon). Along the way, she encounters Christy (Ruairi Conaghan) with his dung cart, old Tyler (Frank Grimes) on his bicycle, Mr. Slocum (Trevor Cooper), a racecourse clerk, and Miss Fitt (Catherine Cusack), a pious spinster. The disturbing story presents a chilling and intimate look into life with Mr. and Mrs. Rooney, an explosive, surprising and often hilarious journey.
The outstanding supporting cast also includes Billy Carter, James Hayes, Liam Thrift, and Jess Regan. The design team includes production design by Cherry Truluck, lighting design by Phil Hewitt, and a solid sound design by Paul Groothuis.
All That Fall is now playing at 59E59 Theaters through December 8. Performances are Tuesday through Thursday at 7 PM; Friday and Saturday at 8 PM; matinee performances are on Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM; and Sunday at 3:00 PM.
