Langston In Harlem Opening

Lori Ann Laster, Walter Marks, Frances Hill, Kent Gash

The world premiere of  Langston in Harlem, a stirring new musical, starring Josh Tower as the well know African-American poet Langston Hughes  is being presented by Urban Stages. The new work set in Harlem from the city’s renaissance period through the Civil Rights movement is directed by Kent Gash and makes use of Hughes’ marvelous poetry to chart his passage from young man into his adult emergence as a one of the most beloved artists of his time. The inspirational musical by Walter Marks infuses the poet’s lyrical language with jazz, gospel, R&B, swing, dance (Choreography By Byron Easley) and spoken word to tell a fascinating tale, which reflects the love, loss, and joy of the Harlem community while making a poignant universal statement about the human spirit.
