The upcoming Broadway revival of “Hello Dolly!” starring the incomparable Bette Midler, in the title role, is destined to be a major happening this season. Tickets went on sale this past Saturday, September 17 ringing in a record breaking $9 million plus dollars, a first-day record amount in the history of Broadway. Wow!” tweeted Bette Midler when she heard the news late on Monday, and the reaction was not unique.
Philip J. Smith and Robert E. Wankel, Chairman and President of The Shubert Organization, respectively, said, “We are thrilled with the tremendous response from Hello, Dolly! ticket-buyers. The combination of this show and Bette Midler has proven irresistible to theatergoers.”
The Divine Ms M heads a stellar cast that includes David Hyde Pierce, Gavin Creel, Kate Baldwin, and Jennifer Simard directed by four-time Tony Award® winner Jerry Zaks. This is the first new production of Hello, Dolly! to appear on Broadway since it opened more than fifty years ago. The production will pay homage to the original work of legendary director/choreographer Gower Champion, considered by many as one of the greatest stagings in musical theater history.
From the moment it was announced, “Dolly!” seemed like a potential box office juggernaut. Midler’s last turn on Broadway, in the 2013 play “I’ll Eat You Last,” turned into a big-dollar attraction. And “Dolly,” seems like a perfect fit for the actress.
Hello, Dolly! was first produced on Broadway by David Merrick in 1964, winning a record 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, a record held for 37 years. The show album Hello, Dolly! An Original Cast Recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.
The show has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits of all time, and was also made into a 1969 film starring Barbra Streisand that was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won three.
Hello, Dolly! Begins preview performances on March 15, 2017, at The Shubert Theatre, with Opening Night set for April 20th.
